Retouching Assignment

Image
For this project, I chose a picture of a person whose face needed a little bit of "retouching". Then , in Photoshop, I used a combination of blurring, blending, and coloring to smooth out the acne on the person's face.

Magazine Cover Assignment

Image
For this project, I had to photoshop my face onto the cover of  a magazine in place of the model's face. It took a while to find a magazine cover that I liked, and then I took a picture of my face with the computer's camera. I had to enhance and adjust the skin tone of my face to make it blend in more with the model's body.

Movie Poster Assignment

Image
So, for this assignment, I had to incorporate myself into a movie poster. I made two, actually, and I couldn't decide which one was better so here's both of them! It was fairly easy to add myself into a poster, I just had to adjust my skin tone and blend myself into the original body.

Photo Collage with Text Features

Image
The prompt for this assignment was to create a collage of photos, with some fun captions in various lettering styles. I took a couple photos of myself with the computer camera, and then I put them all into one scene with captions explaining the various ways I appear in photos. I think that this was an enjoyable assignment because I got to put together a fun collage.

Classical "Painted" Portrait

Image
This "painting" that you can see above is actually not a painting at all! (I doubt I am good enough at art to create a painting of this beauty). It's actually a picture of my cousin Sage drinking a milkshake, and I put a filter on it to fool everyone. The filters I used to make the photo look painted were (I think) palette knife and underpainting. Overall, a very easy assignment but cool to look at nonetheless.

Creative Blurring

Image
For the creative blurring assignment, I had to find a picture and blur out the background. I found a picture of sunflowers, and made a separate layer with a copy of the sunflower in front, and then I applied a blur filter to the background. Overall, I am pleased with how it turned out and may use this technique to edit photos in the future.

Portrait Montage Using Different Backgrounds

Image
The instructions for this assignment told me to put many different backgrounds in the background of one selfie. I cut out a picture I took of myself, and then I used a couple photos of places that I found cool-looking, and then I added them into the background. Overall this was an easy assignment and I loved looking at the pictures in the background (I am just dreaming of being there instead of wherever I am right now), so I am pleased with the result.

Selfie Montage

Image
This was a really fun project! I had fun doing weird poses for the pictures, and then I got to apply filters to them. Some of the filters are directly from Photobooth, but most of them are 'artistic' filters I added in Photoshop.

Triple Evolution

Image
The directions for this assignment were for me to create a scene with a triple evolution of a plant, animal, or person. I chose to do an avocado, which (totally) falls under the "plant" category (it comes from a tree, okay?). Then I made the evolution from tree, to fruit, to guacamole. Lastly, I added in a tabletop to make it seem like all 3 evolutions were sitting together on a table.

Candyland Landscape

Image
For this assignment, I had to create a landscape that resembled something that one might see in Candyland, or in Willy Wonka's sweets factory. It was really fun to come up with a landscape made entirely out of sweets, and I like how it turned out.

Art Addition to Masterpiece

Image
I chose to add myself into the "Tree of Life" by Gustav Klimt because this has always been one of my favorite paintings and I really like the colors. In Photo Booth, I used a filter to make my skin a more yellowish color, and I actually photoshopped myself into the picture twice, once for each person. If you look closely, I replaced some of the eyes on the tree with my own eyes (I bet you would've never known if I hadn't said something).

Repetition Used in a Creative Way

Image
In this project, I had to find and image and use repetition to create a pleasing design. I started out with a simple image of a sunflower and its stem, and then I separately repeated the stem and the flower to make the sunflower into a cool, multi-layered flower with stems coming out of it from all sides. To finish it off, I repeated the sunflower around the sides to frame the center flower. This project was entertaining because it was really easy but allowed a lot of room for creativity.

Look Who's in Our School

Image
Look who's in our school! It's the Cat in the Hat and the rest of the Dr. Seuss crew. This project took me a long time to decide who to let past the school gates, and then I remembered how much I loved the Dr. Seuss books when I was little and so I chose characters from all of my favorite books. I really enjoyed doing this project and I think it looks really good with the cartoon characters on a photo background. To make the scene look more realistic, I added shadows underneath the characters.

Disproportionate Photo

Image
This was such a fun project! I got to use my imagination to think of a cool-looking scene. I was determined to have tiny people in it, and originally I wanted to do people in the grass with bugs looming over them, but I couldn't find a picture of grass with the right perspective. So.... here is the next best thing I could think of. It was pretty simple to add people into the photo of a fish tank, and then I added the pencil for a better size reference. If you look really closely, you can see a kitten staring longingly at the tank.

World Traveller

Image
For this assignment, I had to make it look like I visited one of the seven wonders of the world. I Photoshopped a picture of me onto a background of the Great Wall of China, and then I adjusted the lighting and skin tone of my picture so it would blend more into the background.

Hybrid Creature

Image
For this assignment, I had to create a hybrid creature by adding parts from various animals onto a base animal to create a new, hybrid animal. The "thing" that you see before you is a hybrid between a giraffe, bird, shark, butterfly, lion, and octopus. I guess that makes it a giraffbirtterflyliosharktopus. Or something like that.

Decorate an Empty Room

Image
For this project, I had to find a picture of an empty room and decorate it to my liking. I've always liked a fresh, minimalist style of decoration so I decorated this room in that style. My room looks nothing like this, but my dream room does, so I would be perfectly happy to have this as my room. I had to cut out pictures of decorations and use the perspective tool to make them look correct in the room.

Colorize an Ansel Adams Photograph

Image
This project was the same as the previous recoloring project, but the image had to be a photograph from Ansel Adams, a black and white nature photographer. It was much easier to do than the previous project, because everything blended together and I didn't have to worry about getting the lines exactly right.

Colorized Black/White Image

Image
The image above was originally a black and white photo, that I used Photoshop to add color to. After changing a picture of macarons I took into a grayscale format, I used low opacity paints to layer colors onto the photo. This project took longer than I expected, because the photo I chose had a lot of crisp lines and colors.

Picasso-esque Cubist Portrait

Image
For this project, I had to create a cubist portrait using multiple perspectives. It took quite a while to finish, because I had to find photos with the perspective I needed and I had to position them correctly. The squares in the background were inspired by Piet Mondrian's paintings, because for some reason they remind me of cubism (perhaps because they are squares).

Surrealist Digital Portrait

Image
For this assignment, I had to create a surrealist portrait of someone out of fruit, vegetables, flowers, and other similar-looking things. Although it took quite a long time to create, it was really fun and hilarious to make a portrait out of fruit! I am very pleased with the result as I think it is fairly recognizable as a human, and it looks fun and colorful.

Surrealist Landscape

Image
For the Surrealist Landscape assignment, I had to add objects into a scene to make it surreal. It was fun to put together, but rather hard to make the objects blend into the scene. I call this landscape "Reign of Giants", which is a reference to a game (that you'll just have to guess) because all of the things are really large in proportion to the landscape. If you look in the top left corner, you can see the size of an airplane compared to everything else.

Warhol-esque Digital Painting

Image
To make this painting in the style of pop artist Andy Warhol, I had to use tools in Photoshop to color the image to look like pop art. I put a filter on the image of my cat Juno, and then adjusted the hue of the image. I used a handy coloring trick of selecting all of a similar color to change the color of the black lines, and then I put the 4 images on one canvas.

Georgia O'Keefe Inspired Digital Painting

Image
For this project, I had to paint a picture of a flower in the style of Georgia O'Keefe. After looking at photos of her work, I knew what style to paint in. I found a picture of a rose and cropped it to be close up, and then I painted a rose over it using the original painting as a guideline. This project took a long time because the flower was really detailed, and I wanted to get the colors on the flower just right.

Digital Post-Impressionist Portrait

Image
The Digital Post-Impressionist Portrait was pretty similar to the landscape, but I got to choose who I painted a portrait of. This is my cat Mattie sitting in my bedroom window, glaring at me. The blobby shapes behind her are actually reflections in the window, there was some interesting lighting that caused the reflections to obscure the scene outside the window.

Digital Post-Impressionist Landscape

Image
For this assignment, I had to paint a digital landscape in the loose, colorful post-impressionist style. I found a picture I liked on the internet and then painted over it in Photoshop with a soft brush. I then deleted the photo underneath. The post-impressionist style is not realistic, more of an impression of a scene shown with lines and dots, so I made sure to not blend any of my lines.

Digital Painting of Choice: Sketchbook Pro

Image
For this assignment I had to create a painting of my choice in Sketchbook Pro. As you can see, I did a painting of a witch and a cat. In all honesty, I actually didn't do this painting in Sketchbook Pro, I did it in Krita, which is a free art program I have on my computer at home. I did this at home with my own tablet because I was having trouble with the brushes lagging and the painting would have turned out terrible if I did it at school. Anyways, I hope you like it because it took longer than expected to do!

Create a New Logo for a Favorite Brand (ArtRage)

Image
For this project, I decided to do a logo for Google because, who doesn't know Google! I wouldn't say it's my favorite brand, but it sure is useful. I used a stencil (twice, actually) to create the sun in the logo, and then I wrote 'Google' over it. Writing with the drawing tablet was pretty tricky because it lagged a ton, so this is the neatest I could get it. I didn't really like this project because I don't like ArtRage's limited tools, but at least it was easy :).

Formal/Informal Balance

Image
For this assignment, I had to create a digital painting that exhibited either formal or informal balance. My painting of lemons shows informal balance, because while both sides are not identical, no part of the painting overpowers the other. In ArtRage, I made a simple painting of some lemons and then I used a filter in Photoshop to give it a unique look.

Street Art Piece in Sketchbook Pro

Image
For the Street Art assignment, I had to create a piece in Sketchbook Pro that looked like spray-painted street art. This was my first time using Sketchbook Pro, and it was fairly easy to use and had a lot more tools than ArtRage. For my piece, I chose to do two shadowy cats on a brick wall. I found a picture of a wall on the internet, and then I painted the cats onto it. I really like the result because I think it looks a lot like spray paint.

ArtRage Stencils: Rhythm/Movement

Image
For this assignment, I had to create a piece of art by repeatedly stenciling the same shape. It took quite a long time to stencil the clover pattern I chose enough times to fill up the page. I then added a layer in the background with a blend of colors that I think make the stenciled clovers really pop. This assignment is my second time using ArtRage, and I it's an interesting program to use because the brushes are like actual paint.
